Biosafety

Biosafety addresses the safe handling and containment of biohazardous material. It is meant to prevent lab-acquired infections and/or prevent release into agricultural or natural ecosystems.

Containment is achieved through the use of work practices, safety equipment, PPE and facility features.

Containment of biohazardous material is described by 4 biosafety levels: BSL-1, BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4. The higher the number the more dangerous the material. Click here for a more detailed description of these levels.
