Biosafety Training

Successful completion of a range of biosafety training programs may be required prior to the initiation of your work at Mississippi State University. Please review the following table for information on required training. Training is available live and on-line through Canvas. Live training can be customized to your particular situation. Live Classes

Bloodborne Pathogens

Bloodborne Pathogens is a course designed for those who are at risk for exposure to human or primate blood and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) in laboratory settings. This may encompass activities performed in research, academic, or diagnostic laboratories. The laboratory-oriented course aims to convey how bloodborne pathogens are spread, how to avoid exposure, and what to do if exposed to infectious material.This course should be renewed every three years.

Non-Laboratory Bloodborne Pathogens

This course is designed for those who are at risk for on-the-job exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials in the workplace. It is important to note that this course is distinct from the general Bloodborne Pathogens course which is specifically intended for lab personnel. This course aims to convey how bloodborne pathogens are spread, how to avoid exposure, and what to do if exposed to infectious material. This course is required to be be taken every three years.

Biosafety Principles & Practices 

This course provides an overview of fundamental principles of biosafety including an introduction to risk groups and accompanying biosafety levels, an overview of risk assessments and respective measures of control, biological waste management procedures, as well as emergency response protocols. This course is required for all individuals who work in any biosafety lab. 

NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acids

This course provides an introduction to the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acids. This course details federally-regulated scopes of work involving recombinant/synthetic nucleic acids (rsNA), Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) oversight, and provides an overview of measures to ensure biosafety and biocontainment. This course is required for all individuals who work with rsNA. 

Effective Use of Biological Safety Cabinets (BSC)

This course introduces biological safety cabinets (BSCs). The central objective of this course is to communicate the various types of BSC, guide appropriate unit staging, and detail key considerations for the proper use of a BSC. This course is required for all laboratory staff who use a BSC. 

 

Online Classes

When you click on a class below, you will be prompted to log into CAS and then taken to the MyState Classroom portal where you can self-enroll. Once there, look for the "Canvas Self Enrollment" section. You must then select the correct course from the "Select a Course" dropdown. Once you have selected your course, click "Confirm Enrollment?" and then click "Self Enroll". Your selected course will now be available through your Canvas Courses.

Would you like to enroll your entire group?  If you are an instructor, lecturer, or professor that teaches an online, hybrid, in-person course or laboratory and would like to have your class complete one of the online training courses offered by EH&S, please complete the Self-Enroll Instructor Request eform below. Then, each member of the group can individually log into Canvas to complete their training.
